Tournament Rules

The most current playing rules of the Softball Players Association (SPA) shall govern play except as modified, noted or deleted herein. The Indiana Amateur Softball Association, Inc. sanctions this event, like all others held in the City of South Bend, played at the Belleville Softball Complex and umpired by the South Bend Umpire's Association, Inc.

  1. All teams must show a 2009 SPA Team Membership Card or pay an additional registration fee before playing their first game.
  2. All players must present a photo ID and a valid SPA Player Card or pay a registration fee before participating.
  3. Each team shall be provided an "SPA Official Waiver & Release of Liability & Indemnification Form" which they shall complete as their tournament roster - before playing their first game. All names must be on the roster before playing their first game, however a player may sign the roster whenever they show up to play. No player may compete for more than one team in this tournament. Only male players may compete in this men's senior slow pitch tournament.
  4. Teams shall be provided four-part lineup cards, which must be used for every game.
  5. In pool play the home team is determined by schedule.  In elimination play the home team shall be determined by a coin toss. Team representatives shall be called to the base of the flagpole for a coin toss and lineup card exchange twenty (20) minutes before scheduled starting time.  Failure to have a representative present for the coin toss shall result in your team being named visitor.  A lineup card listing the legibly printed first and last names, uniform numbers and positions of the starting lineup and substitutes must be turned in at the coin toss. Players who show up late may be added to a lineup upon arrival.  Lineup cards shall be checked against team rosters to determine player eligibility.
  6. The umpire shall inspect all bats and equipment before the game begins. Only bats legal for SPA Championship Play shall be allowed for play.  In case of dispute the bat in question shall be ruled illegal and be confiscated by the umpire on behalf of the tournament for further examination. Only official, SPA approved, weighted softball warm-up bats may be used (no donuts, lead pipes, etc.). Note: Any participant caught using an illegal or altered bat shall be ejected, the bat confiscated and the participant may be banned for up to one (1) year from further participation in SPA events!
  7. All participants must wear athletic (softball) shoes.  Steel cleats will not be allowed.
  8. Wearing of hats is optional.  However, if hats are worn, they must be worn in the traditional (bill forward) manner.  Absolutely no exposed bandannas are allowed.

The softballs used for this event shall be ASA approved and manufactured by Dudley.  The balls shall be .44 or less COR, .375 or less compression, with a synthetic optic yellow cover.  Because of a limited supply of softballs are available teams will be responsible to chase foul and home run balls.
